You have been chatting with someone you like and now you want to meet. That is exciting, but remember that, however many messages you have exchanged, you are still meeting someone you do not know well. A few simple habits will let you relax and enjoy it.
Meet in a public place
Choose somewhere busy, such as a café, a pub or a restaurant. You can chat comfortably while staying in sight of other people. If you both want to see each other again, there will be plenty of time for more private meetings later.
Tell someone where you are going
Let a friend or family member know where you are going, when and who with. You can send them your date's name and photo, and share your location during the evening if that makes you feel safer. A quick message to say you are fine is a good habit.
Look after your drink
Keep an eye on your drink at all times and do not accept drinks from people you do not know well. It is also sensible to keep alcohol to a minimum so that you stay alert.
Plan how you will get home
Arrange your own transport so that you can leave whenever you want. Drive yourself if you can, or check the bus and train times, or book a taxi in advance.
Trust your instincts
If something does not feel right, it is perfectly fine to leave. A person who respects you will understand. Never send money or share bank details with someone you have met online, however friendly they seem.
Stay somewhere busy, tell someone where you are, plan your journey home and trust your gut. Then you can simply enjoy the evening.
