Who says a first date has to be a restaurant? A shared activity takes the pressure off and gives you something to talk about. Here are five ideas that work well at any age.
Take a stroll in a garden or park
A botanical garden, a country park or a walk by the river is relaxed, free or cheap, and you can leave easily if you want to. Finish with a cup of tea at the garden café.
Visit an exhibition or museum
Wandering through a gallery gives you plenty to talk about and tells you a lot about the other person's interests. Most are in busy public places, which also makes them a safe choice.
Go to a quiz night
Many pubs and community centres run quiz nights. Working as a team is a friendly way to break the ice, and if you do not win, you still have a good story.
Try a dance or craft class
A taster session of ballroom, a pottery class or a cookery workshop gets you laughing and learning together. It also takes the focus off awkward silences.
Watch a live match or a local show
If you share a favourite sport or enjoy a bit of theatre, going to a local game or performance is a good way to see how you get on. You will have plenty to chat about afterwards.
Keep it comfortable
Whatever you choose, pick something that suits you both, agree where to meet and keep the first date short enough that you leave wanting more.
