You have found a profile that catches your eye, but what do you write? The first message does not need to be clever, just friendly and genuine. Here are some openers that work.
Mention something from their profile
Showing you read their profile is the best way to start. For example:
- “I see you love gardening. What is your favourite thing to grow?”
- “Your photo from the coast is lovely. Where was it taken?”
- “I noticed we both enjoy long walks. Do you have a favourite route?”
Add a little humour
A light touch can make someone smile and want to reply:
- “Tea or coffee? I feel our whole friendship depends on this.”
- “I am told I make a very good Sunday roast. What is your signature dish?”
- “Best holiday you have ever had? I am looking for ideas.”
Be direct and kind
If you prefer to get straight to the point, a simple message works well:
- “Hello, I enjoyed reading your profile. I would love to get to know you.”
- “We seem to have a lot in common. Would you like to chat?”
What to avoid
Skip generic lines such as “hi”, and avoid anything too personal or over-familiar in a first message. Ask one friendly question and keep it short. Be yourself, and give them something easy to answer.
